Synopsis: The novel is set in the little town of Monta Clare, Missouri, at a period of change in America in 1975. Girls are inexplicably missing, and when a wealthy family’s daughter is targeted, Patch, a local youngster with one eye, emerges as an unexpected hero. Patch leaves misery in his behind but manages to save the girl.
Joseph “Patch” Macauley, a thirteen-year-old Missouri kid, was born with only one eye, therefore he wears an eye patch and imagines himself as a pirate. In 1975, he witnesses a masked man mistreating a girl in the Jungle. He attacks the man and saves her, but the predator captures him instead. Patch ultimately wakes up in complete darkness in a cellar, when a different girl pays him a secret visit, heard but never seen. He discovers that her name is Grace, and that there had previously been other girls down there. He eventually got away, but she is nowhere found.
However, the mental instability from the day of Misty’s abduction teases their lives frequently. Patch suffers with the darkness that surrounds him. The haunting memory of Grace, the girl who had lived with him in his most difficult time of his captivity and taught him to survive, becomes a relentless pursuit of the truth or emptiness. At the same time, Saint pursues law enforcement, fueled by an fire of his heart to find Patch and find the mysteries of their past.
The narrative explores the thin line that separates victory from loss, success from failure by using elements of a love story, thriller about a serial killer, and disappearing people investigation scenario.
