These Summer Storms by Sarah MacLean
Let’s be honest: if your billionaire father died and lured you back to the family’s private island with a cryptic will and a posthumous game of emotional sabotage, would you go? No? Well, Alice Storm didn’t get a choice. And that’s where the chaos begins.
Alice — teacher & black sheep — just wanted to show up, give some respect. But Franklin Storm (may he rest in manipulative tech mogul peace) had other plans. Like, say, forcing his estranged children to confront their childhood trauma and each other while being trapped on an island with zero exit plan.
And Alice’s task? Just stay with her mom, siblings who are weird, and—oh yeah—the stranger she accidentally slept with on the train… who is also her dad’s right-hand man. Because of course he is.
“Love and storms have one thing in common—when they hit, you’re never quite the same again.”
The vibes? Succession meets The Inheritance Games, with bonus sexual tension and sea salt. The romance between Alice and Jack is slow-burn, enemies-to-lust-to-love deliciousness. There’s banter, betrayal, WHEW.
Why not five stars? The final act sags a little. Some sibling storylines wrap too fast, others not at all. And honestly, I just wanted more. More healing. More storm metaphors. More chaos. More of Jack , frankly.
Still, this book is rich in all the best ways: flawed characters, family fireworks, tender moments, and big emotional waves. I laughed, I gasped.
By the end of the stormy week, truths have been shattered, alliances shifted, and Alice? She doesn’t just stay. She claims her space—with her art, her love, and her own damn name. 8/10 would get stranded with these Storms again.

Spoilers:
Now Alice back for what was supposed to be a quick, eye-roll-filled funeral. Instead? She walks into a trap disguised as a “celebration of life” and a twisted, billionaire-style will reading: a week-long stay on the island with her dysfunctional family, completing inheritance tasks, courtesy of Dead Dad himself. And if anyone fails, no one gets a dime.
No big deal—just stay on the island. That’s Alice’s entire task. Simple, right?
Except:
- Her mother, Elisabeth, is emotionally colder than the North Atlantic.
- Her siblings are walking caricatures of privilege and pressure:
- Greta, the rule-following legacy robot.
- Sam, the ego in a power suit.
- Emily, the spiritual TikToker with a knowhow for everything but self-awareness.
- And Jack Dean, her father’s right-hand man and—surprise!—the mysterious hookup from her train ride, is now the estate’s grim messenger.

What follows is a week of sabotage, buried secrets, passive family games, painful honesty, and one emotionally hot romance between Alice and Jack. He knew who she was. She didn’t. Sparks fly—some from hate, some from heat.
And under it all, Alice is forced to confront who she is without her father’s control and whether she can forgive the people who failed her, including herself.
