The book opens with the scene of Joe’s funeral. Maya is devastated, and the police are relentless on her, constantly questioning her about the night Joe died. Maya is now left alone to care for her two-year-old daughter, Lily, while battling PTSD and guilt burden. She was barely able to hold it together, but at this time, Maya agrees to her friend’s suggestion to install a nanny cam to keep an eye on Lily’s caregiver.
When she checks the footage, she’s shocked to see Joe, who is supposed to be dead, alive and well in Lily’s room. This throws Maya into a whirlwind of confusion. Desperate for answers, Maya confronts the nanny, Isabella, who in turn attacks her and steals the memory card.
Maya can’t trust the police, as the detective on Joe’s case seems shady and she has already discovered that the same gun that killed Claire also killed Joe. Determined to uncover the truth, Maya starts her own jorney of investigation, when she knows it will lead her down to a dark and ugly path.
Coben’s writing is masterful, the story is fast paced and plot explaination is detailed. Each chapter ends with a hook that makes you curious and readers want to keep reading. Maya’s journey is filled with suspense and unexpected twists. Just when you think you know what’s going on, you’re proven wrong.
Maya is a protective mother and a determined investigator, making her journey both heartbreaking and inspiring.
