Counting Miracles Summary by Nicholas Sparks

Synopsis: Tanner Hughes, an ex-Army Ranger, has spent most of his life on the move. Raised by his grandparents after his mother died in childbirth, he never knew his biological father. Before his grandmother passed away, she gave him a name—possibly his father’s—and urged him to find where he truly belongs. With this clue, Tanner heads to North Carolina, hoping to uncover the truth.

In Asheboro, Tanner meets Kaitlyn Cooper, a single mom and doctor. She’s trying to balance her career and raising two kids, Casey and Mitch, on her own. Tanner is instantly somehow attracted to her, but Kaitlyn is cautious. She knows he doesn’t plan to stay long, and at the end she’s afraid of getting hurt. Despite their reservations, they begin to connect.

Both share a deep commitment to helping others, and slowly, they start to open up to one another. Tanner’s calm, steady presence draws Kaitlyn in, but his nomadic life makes her question if they have a future.

At the same time, we meet Jasper, an 83-year-old widower living alone with his dog, Arlo, in a cabin near the Uwharrie National Forest. Jasper has lived through unimaginable pain. A house fire took his family and left him scarred, both physically and emotionally. Despite everything, he holds on to his faith. Lately, rumors of a white deer in the forest—a creature with spiritual meaning passed down through his family have given him a new sense of purpose. To him, this deer represents hope, a sign that there’s still something sacred left in the world.

As their paths cross, Tanner, Kaitlyn, and Jasper find themselves forming unexpected bonds. Tanner is searching for his father and a place to call home. Kaitlyn is trying to balance her responsibilities as a mother while protecting her heart. Jasper is seeking peace after a lifetime of loss. Together, they share their stories, their struggles, and, ultimately, their hopes for the future.
