The Girls Who Grew Big by Leila Mottley is a heart touching story about teen pregnant moms, there perspective and how they grow in life. Raising children at such a small age is not easy.
How they face the challenges, let’s find out….

“Adela Woods is 16 ears old & pregnant. Her parents banish her where she met a group of outcast young moms who raise their growing brood in the back of Simone’s red truck.
The town thinks the Girls have lost their way, but really they are finding it.”
Book Review: The Girls Who Grew Big by Leila Mottley
The Girls Who Grew Big is raw, & achingly real—a story of teen motherhood, and struggles told with Leila Mottley’s signature lyricism style. The Girls are simply ones that cannot be forgotten easily, and their bond feels both chaotic and real. Simone, Emory, and Adela shine with messy humanity.
But while the emotional depth is undeniable, the middle lags under the weight of too many subplots and a few repetitive romantic entanglements (looking at you, Adela and Tooth/Chris). Some thing felt too tidy for the heaviness they followed.
Still, this is a powerful, necessary book about girlhood with grit, heart, and salt in its teeth.

The Girls Who Grew Big by Leila Mottley Summary
So. Simone is 16, in the back of a red pickup truck, and literally cuts through her own umbilical cord to deliver twins. No hospital. No support. Just her boyfriend, (Tooth, yes, that’s his name and no, it doesn’t get better), who looks at her .
Fast-forward four years: she’s twenty, still with him (ugh), raising Luck and Lion ( twins ), and just found out she’s pregnant again. Cue internal screaming.

“The ocean don’t care why you cry. But it’ll hold your tears anyway.”
Meanwhile, Adela—former swimming star, Olympic dreams and all—is banished from Indiana to Florida when her parents find out she’s pregnant. They basically go: “Go live with Grandma, give the baby away, then forget it ever happened.”
She lands in Padua Beach, which is basically one step above purgatory, and meets the Girls: a ragtag crew of teen moms led by Simone and living out of her pickup. Adela’s intrigued. Then overwhelmed. Then messy.
Then there’s Emory: 17, has a baby named Kai on purpose, and is absolutely tensed under the weight of it. Her racist grandpa kicks her out, she joins the Girls, and guess what? She’s maybe, possibly, in love with Adela.
The Girls Who Grew Big Ending Spoilers:
Everything spirals. Simone tries to get an abortion—clinic’s destroyed due to a hurricane. So she drinks an herbal tea and does it herself. Yes, it’s as dangerous as it sounds. Emory applies to Stanford. Adela falls for a guy named Chris… who turns out to be Simone’s one. Boom. Betrayal unlocked.
Then—Luck falls, admitted in the hospital, Child Services comes in, and everyone’s secrets unravels in the ER. Emory gets engaged, & then un-engaged. Adela dumps Chris (finally). Simone takes her kids and leaves. Emory chooses college, even if it means leaving Kai. Adela gives birth on the beach, surrounded by the Girls.
And just like that, they grow big.
