The story starts with father sending Roscille, a 17-year-old girl to Scotland to marry Lord Macbeth, who is much older, around 39. The book then move to Roscille traveling to Glamis Castle for her wedding. Her father uses her as a pawn for his plans, like Dr. Frankenstein with his monster. But when Roscille arrives, she starts making her own choices, challenging the male-dominated world around her.

At Glamis, Roscille is scared of consummating her marriage with the brutish Macbeth. She cleverly asks for a wedding gift before they lie together, setting off a web of lies and schemes. This loosely follows the events of Shakespeare’s play but with many differences. Roscille uses her intelligence and unique perspective to survive in a dangerous new life, avoiding the marriage bed and navigating treacherous waters.

The book blends Scottish folklore, mythology, and dark fantasy. Some kind of violence and cruelty are constant, with a creeping sense of fear. In the original play Roscille is not the power-hungry Lady Macbeth. Instead the intended seen was, she is a sheltered girl trying to survive. Her cleverness and survival are clear, but she often feels overwhelmed. Also, Roscille’s disdain for Scotland and its customs, shaped by her upbringing and experiences, adds depth to her character.

Characters, like Macbeth, Fleance, and Lisander, are also retelled in a fresh way. Macbeth is a man whose madness and going into madness remains key in the prose. Fleance and Lisander play bigger roles, adding more salt and complexity. The writing is poetic and interesting, with Reid’s distinct tone. However, some readers may find the language and repetition challenging alon with certain descriptions and themes that are repeated often. The book’s feminist themes are strong, highlighting the rage and struggle of women in a patriarchal society.

While “Lady Macbeth” is very different from other Shakespeare’s play, it offers a fresh look at the characters and their motivations. Its dark, gothic atmosphere and exploration of power dynamics make it worth a read. However, it may not appeal to fans and readers those looking for a faithful adaptation of the original text by Shakespeare.
