The Strength of the Few by James Islington is a story of Vis getting synchronised (sort of multiverse), and now 3 bodies, 3 stories and 3 problems.
But something is cooking..? Let’s find out..

“But with all that has happened—with what I fear is coming—I am not sure it matters anymore.
I am no longer one. I won the Iudicium, and lost everything. Three different bodies, three different lives. I have to hide; fight; play politics.
Above all, though, I need to find answers before it’s too late. To understand the nature of what has happened to me, and why..”
Book Review: The Strength of the Few by James Islington
You have finished The Will of the Many reading all that political mind games, twists etc.—and then James Islington drops The Strength of the Few and now you have 3 worlds to get over with.
So our boy Vis? Yeah, he’s back but in three versions of himself. 3! One’s is on his way through Roman-style politics, other one Egyptian zombie apocalypse, and last one is Celtic stuff where kings are trying to kill him.
The main storyline is around of 1000’s years ago, the world split into three copies to stop a power-hungry god called the Concurrence from turning everyone into his sort of puppets. More of this later..
Now Vis has to pull off the impossible—use his “synchronism” (basically triple consciousness) to stop that guy from wiping everyone out again. And yes, now as 3 bodies are present, so is confusion. But to be honest that is fun too.
Does it slow down a bit in the middle? Sure. It’s a bit slow in middle. But the ending? Absolute mad. The classic Islington kinda story where everything suddenly happens at once.
Vis himself gets pushed to his limits. So yeah—three worlds, one hero, existential crisis, and a big cliffhanger at the end. Are we okay? Absolutely not. Are we reading book three the second it drops? You bet.

The Strength of the Few Summary (Spoiler -Free)
Okay, so The Strength of the Few… where do I even start? Remember Vis, the guy from The Will of the Many ? Yeah, he’s back but he’s missing and somehow, he’s in 3 different worlds at once.(3x suffering)
“If you thought you knew where this was going, let me just hold your hand while I say it probably didn’t go that direction.”
Basically, Vis becomes what’s called “synchronized,” meaning there’s a version of him in Res, Obiteum, and Luceum — and all three are living totally different nightmares.
- In Res, it’s political chaos: the Hierarchy’s falling apart, everyone’s scheming, and civil war is about to break out.
- Then you go to Obiteum, which feels like ancient Egypt but with zombie apocalypse — dead being controlled by some god called the Concurrence. Will he wipe out the earth? again?
- And Luceum? Power-hungry kings, and many new rules to bide by.
And the craziest part? All three Vis start changing. One’s colder, one’s more desperate, one’s… trying his best. He ends up crossing a few moral lines. You can practically feel him slowly breaking.
The Strength of the Few Ending Explained: (Spoiler – Free)
By the end, everything is pointing towards a full of action clash with the Concurrence — because if one Vis fails, they all die. (No pressure.) And Cliffhanger. Massive and evil.
So yeah, it’s mind-bending, emotional and good fantasy. But honestly? You’ll finish it & have question and that’s okay, we are here for that.
