Getting Away with Murder by Shari Lapena

“Jill and Ted adore their New York brownstone the way others adore their children. They have carefully, expensively, made every inch of it their own. It reflects who they are, their status and tastes. With the grand mahogany staircase and state-of-the-art kitchen, it is the stuff of glossy magazines and real-estate dreams. It is their sanctuary.”

Reviewed- Getting Away with Murder by Shari Lapena

So, the story starts with Ted and Jill Westcott, and they are rich, really rich. The kind of rich that comes with a gorgeous Brooklyn brownstone, expensive tastes, and absolutely no idea what to do when the money disappears. So, naturally, when they faces financial situation, they decide to murder. (what!)

The funny thing of the characters are, neither Ted nor Jill is particularly likable. They’re shallow and entitled. Yet I was completely in the zone with watching their carefully crafted world crumble. Why are awful people in thrillers so entertaining? It’s a mystery I’ll never solve.

Shari Lapena wastes no time getting to the good stuff. The pacing is fast, the chapters are relatively short, and every time I thought, okay, just one more chapter, twists after twist.

The real things of this book happens when after murder, it’s the paranoia that follows. Guilt, greed, and fear all around.

“Nothing exposes a marriage quite like murder and a pending inheritance.”

Now, why only 3.5 stars?

The middle section is a little slow if you compare from rest of the parts of the book. There were number of characters with suspicious side that after a while I started suspecting the mailman itself. Some of the twists felt a bit too convenient to me.

Still, this was an entertaining read. It will keep you hooked once you start but still is far away from being perfect.

Getting Away with Murder Summary Spoilers

Ted and Jill Westcott have a problem. Actually, they have several. They’re broke, drowning in debt, And if there’s one thing these two love more than each other, it’s that house.

So, what do they do? Get normal jobs..or Maybe stop buying expensive wine for a while?

Of course not. This is a Shari Lapena thriller.

Instead, they come up with a much more creative solution: murder.

Well… everything.

Greg goes overboard, and at first, it seems like the perfect crime. The authorities think it’s an accident, the inheritance is within reach.

As panic sets in, everyone becomes suspicious. Jill’s best friend seems a little too curious. Greg’s ex-wife has plenty of reasons to hold a grudge. Their housekeeper notices more than they realize. And an old acquaintance of Ted’s shows up at exactly the wrong time. Coincidence?

Then the texts arrive. “I know what you did.”

Excuse me? Who knows? Is there a witness? A secret enemy?

The inheritance that was supposed to save their lives starts destroying them instead.

Because here’s the thing about murder: pushing someone might be easy. Living with it? Not so much.

Getting Away with Murder – Ending Explained

The ending is watching Ted and Jill slowly unravel. Guilt creeps in. Paranoia takes over. Every knock on the door feels ominous, every text message feels threatening, and every conversation turns into a game of Do they know we’re murderers?

The ending asks a real question – As the lies pile up and the pressure mounts, can two deeply flawed, deeply desperate people really get away with the perfect crime or is karma finding its way up?

Quotes:

“A reminder that greed doesn’t just open doors; sometimes it pushes people right overboard.”
