“The past never really stays buried. It just waits for the worst possible moment to dig itself back up.”
What happens in Nobody’s fool by Harlan Coben ?
- Wakes up in Spain at 21, covered in blood, next to his very-dead girlfriend. Doesn’t remember a damn thing. Panics. Runs.
- Becomes a detective, only to be kicked out of the NYPD after one (very poorly executed) rooftop chase.
- Loses his fiancée to a brutal murder.
- Just as he’s finally piecing together a semi-functional life—with a wife, a new baby, and a teaching gig for aspiring amateur detectives—his worst nightmare walks into his classroom.
A woman. Familiar face. One he knows is dead.
So what does she do? Naturally, she bolts the moment their eyes meet. And what does Sami do? Like any self-respecting protagonist in a Coben thriller, he chases after her, because of course he does.
Now, let’s pause for a second. Imagine being Sami. You’ve spent twenty-two years believing that the woman you loved and lost is gone forever. That you were inches away from being arrested for her murder. And then, boom—she’s standing in front of you, very much alive, looking like she’s seen a ghost (which, technically, you’re the ghost in this situation).
What would you do? Call the cops? Have a quiet existential crisis? Nope. Not in a Coben novel.

Nobody’s fool Spoilers, Ending?
Sami, armed with a brain that may not always be the sharpest but is certainly the most determined, throws himself into solving the impossible mystery: Who is this woman? If she’s Anna, how the hell is she alive? And if she’s not… then what kind of twisted game is someone playing?
And because life isn’t complicated enough, guess what? The man convicted of murdering Sami’s fiancée is about to walk free on a technicality. That’s right—one of the only sure things in Sami’s life (i.e., the guy who was locked up for ruining it) is suddenly back in play.
With the help of his detective students and an old police buddy, Sami goes on a relentless chase that will force him to confront his past, untangle a web of buried secrets, and quite possibly, redefine everything he thought he knew about love, betrayal, and justice.
As always, Coben delivers. Twists? Everywhere. So, if you love thrillers that mess with your mind, make you laugh at the worst possible moments, and keep you glued to the pages until 3 AM—congratulations. Nobody’s Fool is your next read.
Book Review:
Number of Pages | 352 pages |
My Rating | 4.5⭐⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ |
Release Date | March 25, 2025 |
Coben knows how to hook you—this book is a fast-paced, twisty puzzle that keeps you guessing (and screaming, “WAIT, WHAT?!”). Sami is flawed but relentless, and his ragtag crew adds charm to the chaos. The suspense? Delicious. The humor? Dry and perfectly timed.
So, why not five stars? A few plot threads felt a bit too tangled, and some characters needed more depth. But did I have a blast? Absolutely. If you love your thrillers with smart twists and sarcastic wit, grab this one. Just… don’t blink. You will miss something.
