Review: Mate by Ali Hazelwood

Okay, let’s be real — Mate by Ali Hazelwood is basically the literary equivalent of that one friend who shows up, drops a “you are my mate” bomb, and suddenly your entire life is chaos… but in the best way possible.

We pick up in Hazelwood’s deliciously unhinged paranormal world, where Serena — the world’s first Human-Were hybrid — just wants to exist without being dissected, worshipped, or kidnapped. Reasonable, right? But fate (and Ali Hazelwood’s unrelenting commitment to slow-burn torture) has other plans.

Enter Koen Alexander: grumpy, stoic Alpha of the Northwest pack, a man who would literally burn the world down for her — but, you know, respectfully. With boundaries. Because that’s who he is.

From the time they meet, Koen’s sense of duty is in the focus. Serena’s chaos, contrary he’s in control, and result? Sparks.

“And when I’m with you, I feel… a little less like half of two things, and a little more whole.”

The outside world is going through politics, drama and what not — but honestly, the romance part is far more intense specially when things like this happens, “If I have to chain you to my bed to keep you alive, I will not hesitate.” Excuse me, sir? Calm down. Or don’t.

Misery (from Bride) has a special appearance to provide the sarcastic BFF energy we all need, the political tension is good, and the humor? Peak Ali Hazelwood — snarky, self-aware, and sprinkled with enough sexual tension to power a small city.

By the end, Serena finds her way and strength, Koen admits his love, and we’re all left happy.

Summary Spoilers:

We meet Serena Paris, the world’s first Human-Were hybrid, who’s basically the supernatural version of “can’t I catch a break?” She’s survived Vampyre imprisonment, endless media chaos, and now she’s under the reluctant protection of Koen Alexander — Alpha of the Northwest pack, professional brooder, and owner of arms so protective they could probably qualify as a weapon.

From the start, their chemistry is very to the point and sort of convincing, but of course, they both deny.

Serena’s existence is a political nightmare. Enter The Favored — a creepy cult who believes Serena’s hybrid nature is divine.

They don’t just want her; they want to own her. And guess who’s not having that? Our Koen, who’s stuck between his duty to remain unattached and to maintain his self-control around Serena.

“If I’ve given you the impression that I’m kind, something is very wrong, either with me or with you.”

The mate bond between them is — intense. Cue the arguments, tensions, and the kind of proximity that could melt hearts.

There are moments where Koen’s protectiveness is annoying to be honest.

When the Serena’s past resurfaces, the couple finally stop showing and faking and choose each other — not because of destiny, but in spite of it. By the end, the world’s still in chaos, politics everywhere, but Serena and Koen? Fully mated, emotionally engaged, and happy.
