“Jet has never thought that she will be having enemies. But now she looks at each and one in a new light: even her family, her ex, and even best friend turned sister-in-law,.”
Book Review: Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson
What would you do if you had seven days to live, courtesy of someone smashing your head in? Cry? Sleep? Not Jet Mason. She chooses violence. And detective work. And chaotic energy.
At 17 (yes, seventeen, not 27), Jet’s life is now upside down when a head injury is revealed. But rather than sitting idle, she decides to solve her own murder case. If you are going to face something, there will be some drama, right?
Jet is sarcastic, dramatic, and deeply relatable. Some of the parts feels like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder if the main character had zero chill and weird family concept.
Billy, her loyal partner in crime-solving, is the cinnamon roll we all need. Their slow-burn friendship/romance will give you all the feels (and a few trust issues).

Was it perfect? Almost. Jet’s humor occasionally leans a little too Gen Z and not every red herring hit its mark. Also, her mom—ma’am, please stop talking.
Still, I devoured it. Funny, emotional, sharp. Jackson’s done it again. Just… hold onto your head.

Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson Summary Spoilers
Jet Mason is seventeen, a little snarky, a lot lonely, and oh yeah—has few days to live. Why? Because someone attacked her with a blunt object, and now she has an inoperable brain injury that’s basically a ticking time bomb.
The clock’s counting down, and she has one question on her mind: “Who the hell did this to me?”
“I didn’t cry when I found out I was dying. I cried when I realized no one would really care.”
Doctors offer her a hail-Mary surgery—with a less-than-50% survival rate. Jet says “hard pass” and instead ropes in her best friend Billy to help her solve her own attempted murder before time runs out.
The suspects? Let’s just say the list is longer than Jet’s remaining lifespan. There’s her emotionally not so comforting mother, her ex-boyfriend who’s also acting weird, and some town locals who may or may not want to see her gone. Everyone seems to have a secret, and Jet’s not exactly whom to trust.

Not Quite Dead Yet Ending Explained:
As Jet’s body begins to fail—she even loses the basic working of her arm—she runs against time and pain to just see the truth. It’s a raw, emotional, often darkly humorous journey through privilege, family drama, and betrayal. Kinda remind me of Think Knives Out meets A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
Jet solves her own attempted murder — unmasking the culprit — but sadly, she dies from her aneurysm before it’s public. The mystery is closed, but Jet doesn’t live to see justice served.
