“Mallory Fontaine comes from a long line of witches, the only magic she possesses is the ability to see ghosts, which is rarely as useful as one would think. She and her sister are trynna maintain the family business. One More murder…who is at the centre Mallory?”
Book Review: The House Saphir by Marissa Meyer
Okay, a French mansion, a murderous ghost, a fake witch who can sometimes really talk to the ghosts, and a botanist who’s way too good for this world. Is this sound interesting, then come in…
So, we’ve got Mallory Fontaine, our main character. She earns money by claiming to flee ghosts until she’s hired to, you know… actually haunted one. The client? Armand Saphir — heir to that haunted house.
His ancestor, Count Bastien had killed his wives and becoz of this, the rumor is, his ghost is still hanging around in that mansion. Mallory thinks it’s the perfect con—until it’s not. Because it turns out there is a ghost, people keep dying, and her “fake it till you make it” plan is hanging by a thread.
Meanwhile, Armand is over here talking about herbs, potions and overall, he is the kind of gentle soul you want to fall for. Of course, Mallory is too busy pretending not to like him. Their dynamic? Reverse grumpy/sunshine perfection. She’s kind of love is a scam type girl.
The plot twists aren’t that surprising because you can literary guess them— you’ll probably figure them out before Mallory does — but does it matter…? The vibes? Immaculate. The ghosts? Delightfully vengeful. The ending? Cathartic in the best “the ghost wives got their justice” kind of way.
So no, it’s not terrifying. It’s not spicy either. But it is charming, eerie, and exactly the kind of story you read under a blanket while whispering, “I could totally survive this haunted house… probably.”

The House Saphir Summary Spoilers
So, we meet Mallory Fontaine — professional con artist, part-time ghost tour guide, and full-time fraud witch. She can talk to ghosts (so, like, 10% witch), but mostly she’s just trying to survive with her sister Anaïs by tricking rich people into believing their “spiritual cleanses” actually work. (Spoiler: they don’t.)
“I do love how you always sound so confident, even when I suspect you have no idea what you’re doing.”
Enter Armand Saphir — sweet, plant-loving descendant of the infamous wife-murdering Count Bastien Saphir (also known as Monsieur Le Bleu, because of course the French had to make serial killing sound fancy).
Armand needs to get his mansion free from spirits. Mallory, sensing a good chance to earn lots of money grabs the chance.
Naturally, things go bad fast. The ghost of Monsieur Le Bleu doesn’t like visitors. Soon enough, Mallory starts realizing her fake magic might have to become real — or at least convincing enough to not die trying. And let’s not forget: there’s a brand-new murder.
