Book Review: The Tenant by Freida McFadden
Have you ever read a book and thought, “Okay, this could 100% be a Netflix thriller… and I’d binge it in one night”? That’s The Tenant by Freida McFadden in a nutshell. Fast-paced? Check. Creepy tenant? Oh yes. Mild paranoia after reading? Absolutely.
Blake, our unlucky finance bro turned accidental landlord, is living his worst life—jobless, broke, and renting out his brownstone to Whitney, who seems sweet but gives off serious Single Female vibes. As weird noises starts and Blake’s get started to blend into delusion, you can’t help but scream.

The book is highly addictive, twisty, and somewhat unsettling too. McFadden’s writing is on point, the pacing almost never fell behind, and the scenes? Chef’s kiss. Also, the NYC brownstone setting, feels like a character itself.
Now, the missing star? It’s because the twist was a tiny bit predictable (like, I saw you peeking around the corner, twisty plot). Also, the “unhinged woman” trope? We’ve seen her. We know her. She could use a break.

The Tenant by Freida McFadden Summary (Spoilers)
Blake Porter had it all—or so he thought. Recently promoted to VP at his marketing firm and engaged to the lovely (and very Type A) Krista, his future looked as smooth as a Pinterest wedding board.
But then… plot twist! He gets fired a week later for allegedly leaking client strategies to a competitor. Cue financial ruin, awkward dinners, and desperate Craigslist listings.
“I used to be a man with a plan. Now I’m just a man with a whole lot of questions and not a single answer.”
Enter Whitney Cross—sweet, smiley, the tenant dreams are made of. Or nightmares. Because the moment she moves in, things get creepy. Strange smells coming from her room, household items gone missing, and a certain weird things starts off.
Blake’s unease grows—but Krista? She’s team Whitney all the way, dismissing Blake’s concerns as stress-induced paranoia. (Classic gaslight alert )

As Blake slowly finds the clue, a detective shows up investigating Krista’s friend Becky’s overdose-death ( which can maybe murder). Suspicion starts to build, alliances reforms, and soon Blake isn’t just questioning Whitney—he’s questioning everyone. Is Whitney who she says she is? Is Krista hiding something? Is Blake actually losing his mind?
He is… but not in the way you think.
The Tenant Ending Spoilers:
Turns out, Whitney is actually Krista’s half-sister, and this has been a revenge plot all along. Yep—Krista is the mastermind behind everything, from Blake’s firing to Becky’s death, to point it all on him. Blake, sweet summer child that he is, walked right into her trap wearing a big dumb “trusting fiancé” smile.
But wait—it gets juicier. Just when Krista thinks she’s got it all done, Whitney flips the script and exposes her. Turns out, Whitney wasn’t in on the long con—she was conning the con artist.
In the end? Krista gets arrested. Blake is free, confused, and still annoyingly optimistic. And Whitney? She vanishes into the night like the chaos gremlin she is.
Moral of the story: Never trust the tenant… or your fiancée.
Quotes:
“She was the perfect tenant… a little too perfect. Turns out, perfection’s just a fancy word for ‘trap.'”
