Sunrise on the Reaping Review by Suzanne Collins Spoilers

“Started in District 12 (of course), where teenage Haymitch is just a scrappy, sarcastic kid trying to survive—so basically, exactly how you’d expect him to be, but with slightly less alcohol. Then, as per usual, the Capitol decides to ruin everything with a Quarter Quell twist: twice as many tributes. Because why not double the child murder? Very on-brand, Snow.”

Book Review: Sunrise on the Reaping | Mr. Book Review |

I thought I didn’t need Haymitch’s backstory. Turns out, I desperately did. Sunrise on the Reaping isn’t just another trip to the arena—it’s a gut punch wrapped in a masterpiece. Collins once again proves she’s not just writing dystopian fiction; she’s holding up a mirror to reality.

Collins reminds us that history is written by the victors… but also rewritten by the powerful. This book makes you question everything—and isn’t that exactly what a great dystopian novel should do?

Plot Synopsis – Sunrise on the Reaping Spoilers

This time, we’re thrown into the 50th Hunger Games—the infamous Second Quarter Quell, a.k.a. the one where Haymitch Abernathy somehow made it out alive. We already knew he won. We already knew the Capitol ruined his life. But oh, dear, we did not know the half of it. Turns out, Collins was keeping some pieces of the puzzle locked away until now, and let me tell you—they change everything.

  • From there, it’s all the Hunger Games prep we know and love (or, you know, deeply fear).
  • The Capitol, as always, is disturbingly obsessed with the spectacle—plastering smiles on these poor kids’ faces while sharpening the knives behind their backs. And guess what?
  • Collins weaves in some very familiar faces, proving once again that Panem is just a small, trauma-infested town where everyone somehow knows everyone. Did we need a cameo from that character? Maybe not. Did we love it anyway? Absolutely.

Hunger Games?

But the arena itself? Oh, it’s a death trap on steroids. Collins somehow makes each Games feel new while keeping the same gut-wrenching core intact. Haymitch isn’t just fighting to survive—he’s playing the system. And while we already knew he outsmarted the Capitol in some way, the way he does it? Absolutely ruthless. Absolutely brilliant. And absolutely guaranteed to make you want to throw the book across the room.

“Survival isn’t the same as living. But in the arena, it’s the only choice they give us.”

Final Verdict?

And then, just when you think you get why Haymitch is the way he is, Collins rips your heart out again. We get a deeper look at the slow, quiet rebellion bubbling under the surface long before Katniss Everdeen took center stage. Turns out, history doesn’t start with the Mockingjay—it’s been edited, rewritten, manipulated.

So, was this book necessary? Maybe not. But Suzanne Collins, you brilliant, merciless genius—please, never stop breaking my heart.
