Meet May Hanover: the poster child for perfection. Raised by a no-nonsense, 1st-generation Chinese single mom, May has spent her life following the rules so closely she probably alphabetized them. (Were you that kid in school who asked the teacher if they forgot to assign homework? Yeah, that was May.)

Her friends, Lauren and Kelsey, nicknamed her “Little Sheriff,” which is both adorable and vaguely ominous in hindsight. But here’s the thing—behind May’s shiny façade lurks a whole lot of baggage, and her friends? Oh, they’re carrying matching sets.

The three of them met at Wildwood, a bougie summer camp where friendships were forged over shows and lake swims—or, in their case, scandal and drama. Years later, they’re still inexplicably friends. (Honestly, why do they even hang out? Habit? Guilt? A shared Netflix password?) Anyway, they decide to reconnect with a girls’ trip to the Hamptons. Sounds fun, right? What could go wrong?

Oh, just EVERYTHING.

One minute they’re thinking about the good old days, and the next, they’re pulling a drunken prank on two strangers. (Quick question: when has a drunken prank ever ended well?) The prank spirals faster than your favorite celebrity’s Twitter meltdown, and before you know it, one of those strangers vanishes. Poof. Gone. Now the police are involved, and these women are knee-deep in trouble—and secrets. Lots and lots of secrets.

As the investigation heats up, so do the tensions between May, Lauren, and Kelsey. Can we pause to ask: Why are they even still friends? They bicker, they backstab, and they have enough unresolved issues to fill an entire season of therapy sessions. But it’s hard to look away because their trainwreck of a friendship is just that entertaining.

Flashbacks to their Wildwood days reveal their shared history—some of it sweet, most of it sour. A tragic accident. Viral scandals. Bad decisions they’d rather not explain to anyone (including themselves). May starts to wonder: Is she the only one being honest here? (Spoiler: Absolutely not.) Who’s lying? Who’s hiding what? And why is Lauren looking so suspiciously calm during all of this?

Burke yanks the rug out from under you like a magician with a vendetta with twists. By the end, you’ll be questioning not just the characters’ choices but your own. Would YOU pull a drunken prank? Would YOU stay friends with these hot messes? And most importantly, would YOU survive a girls’ trip to the Hamptons?

The Note Book Review by Alafair Burke

The Note by Alafair Burke is a wild cocktail of suspense, secrets, and seriously messy friendships. Imagine a girls’ trip to the Hamptons with your most dramatic friends—sounds fun, right? Now throw in a drunken prank, a missing person, and decades of buried scandals. Still fun? Nope, it’s chaos, and you can’t look away.

May, the Little Sheriff, is a rule-follower with more skeletons in her closet than a haunted house. Her friends, Lauren and Kelsey, aren’t exactly saints either. But here’s the kicker: why are they even friends? Loyalty? Blackmail? Shared trauma?

One downside of this book is the likability of the characters, many fans can be upset over it.

The Note is part thriller, part friendship autopsy, and all drama. It’s funny, dark, and deliciously over-the-top—a cautionary tale about secrets, loyalty, and maybe rethinking that next vacation.. You’ll laugh, gasp, and possibly yell, “What were they thinking?!”
