If We Ever Meet Again by Ana Huang Summary Spoilers
Picture this: two American college students, a city like Shanghai, and a study-abroad program that promises adventure, romance, and… questionable decision-making. Sounds fun, right?
They start off as friends, filled with stolen glances and will-they-won’t-they tension. Farrah tries to crush on a fellow student, Leo, (who is very much taken), while Blake keeps telling himself he’s totally not into her. Spoiler alert: he is. And after a heart-to-heart that involves some serious childhood trauma bonding (a classic romance catalyst), they finally give in. Blake’s no-virgin rule? Magically forgotten.
For a while, everything is chef’s kiss. Romantic adventures through the streets of Shanghai, group outings that make you wish you were part of their friend circle, and a love so intense you just know something is about to go terribly wrong. And oh, does it go wrong.
New Year’s Eve rolls around, and Farrah is away. And what does our boy Blake do? Oh, just reconnect with his ex, Cleo. You know, casually. And then, in a stunning display of what were you thinking?, cheating happens. And if that wasn’t messy enough, Cleo soon drops another bomb—she’s pregnant.
What does Blake do? He panics. Instead of coming clean, he decides, Hey, you know what will fix this? Being the best boyfriend ever! Because that’s how secrets work, right? But life isn’t a bad rom-com, and secrets have expiration dates. When Farrah inevitably finds out, she is rightfully devastated.
But wait—there’s more. The prologue (because Ana Huang loves emotional torture) gives us Blake’s perspective of the breakup. And honestly? It hurts. You almost—almost—feel bad for him. Because as dumb as his decisions were, the guy loves Farrah.
Between the breathtaking Shanghai setting, the phenomenal found family vibes, and a romance that’s equal parts swoon-worthy and WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT, this book takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Will Farrah and Blake find their way back to each other? Will Shanghai tourism skyrocket because Ana Huang made it sound so magical? And most importantly—why do we keep falling for books that emotionally wreck us?

Book Review: If We Ever Meet Again by Ana Huang
This book had me feeling like a tourist in Shanghai—mesmerized by the setting but slightly lost in the plot. Farrah and Blake’s young love had its sweet moments, but also a few facepalm moments. The found family? Absolute gold. Their friendships felt real, fun, and made me wish I had a group to explore the city with.
Now, let’s talk about the trope. Cheating. Why, Blake? WHY? I get that they’re young and make mistakes, but did we need this particular mistake? Farrah’s character arc felt a bit flat—girl, you got a prestigious internship, but all we focus on is your relationship? Meanwhile, Blake had a more developed journey. Justice for Farrah’s ambitions!
Would I recommend it? If you love Ana Huang’s writing, yes. If you’re not a fan of messy young love, maybe not. Either way, Shanghai deserves its own spin-off.
