Book Review: The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman

Ohh!!, the Thursday Murder Club are back, and I am so here for it! The Impossible Fortune is everything I wanted — funny, clever, heartwarming, and full of those li’l moments that make you love these characters like you know them.

I liked seeing Ron take center stage with his family drama, Elizabeth quietly working through her grief, Joyce being delightfully nosy, and Ibrahim offering his usual calm wisdom (+ liked his sort of counseling sessions with Connie?). And Bogdan — quietly brilliant as always — had me laughing out loud in one scene with Elizabeth.

Osman nails the balance between suspense and heart. You’re rooting for the detectives, laughing at their acts and scenes, and maybe even tearing up at their some emotional moments. Cozy mystery perfection. I laughed, I cheered, I really liked this book series all over again.

The Impossible Fortune Summary Spoilers

All right, The start of the novel is like: you’re at a wedding, everything is going smooth, Joyce is probably sneaking cake into her handbag, and Elizabeth is very much Not In The Mood.

Then the Best Man walk aside, whispering, “Someone’s trying to kill me.” And just like that, the party gets over even before the songs would be played. The next morning? He’s gone. Vanished. And the view of his office looks like someone had a serious fight in there.

“Only God can kill Elizabeth”

“And even he’d think twice”

Add in Connie, the local drug queen turned client, a new detective with something to prove, and Bogdan as always, the quiet MVP whose “good cop/bad cop” scene with Elizabeth deserves a star on its own—and you’ve got the perfect recipe for good book.

This is where the Thursday Murder Club shines. Elizabeth literally can’t quite just switch off her instincts. Joyce—well, Joyce is having the time of her life, whether she admits it or not.

Ibrahim’s character shows both therapy and side-eye vibes, while Ron suddenly finds himself at the center of the storyline, handling family drama (a gangster son-in-law—what could possibly go wrong?) and stepping up in ways he never quite has before. Isn’t it funny how danger brings out everyone’s best (or worst) qualities?

Elizabeth is still processing the loss of Stephen, Joyce is as delightfully nosy as ever and Ron faces family drama that threatens to turn violent. Bogdan, as always, proves himself indispensable.
