You know those massive bestsellers everyone seems to have read, That’s The Help. And now, 17 years later, Stockett is back with a 600+ page novel that looks intimidating… until you accidentally finish half of it in one sitting.
“His laughter is all on the inside. His body shakes and he keeps his lips shut, but he is still laughing.”
My Verdict- The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett

The main character of the story is Meg, an 11-year-old girl abandoned (or so it seems) when her mother disappears on Christmas Eve. She ends up in a odd orphanage in Mississippi, where she’s quickly called as “unadoptable.” (which, in this world, basically means, she is unwanted and morover she will be treated accordingly. Encouraging stuff, right?)
Enter Birdie, a young woman having few problems of herself, arriving in town to ask her wealthy sister for financial help. (Self-respect left the chat). But Birdie starts volunteering at the orphanage, and then she meets Meg, and the story clicks into place.
Because this story is all about survival and possibilty.
Birdie pushes Meg to think for situation where her mother isn’t coming back? But in the Great Depression times, Birdie herself starts realizing that wealth and respectability can be considered as illusion. (if you are well dressed)
What comes next is a sort of survival story, with part rebellion imprints. It’s all about giving a shot and trying out of the box things. They form an odd alliance, challenge the town’s hypocrisy, and navigate a world full of:
- Men, mostly unreliable
- social circles who judges every little thing
- & systems designed for putting them down and making people feel small
Then comes Charlie—another woman shaped by loss. And this is where things get interesting.
Because instead of just sitting quietly and enduring everything, they face the situation and tries to do something at least.
Are their methods always morally right and clean? Not always. But do they work? Well… that’s the question for which you will try to read these 600 pages.
What makes the story punch is not only the drama part but it’s the tone too. There’s warmth & humor in the storyline keeps you engaged and not feel heavy even if the situation is serious. You feel the stakes, but you also feel the resilience.
And somehow, through all the chaos, one goal remains bold, these women refuse to be powerless.
By the end, everything points toward hope, a lil more directly. Though after everything they’ve been through, you don’t really mind.
