The Liar’s Crown Summary by Abigail Owen
Main Characters in The Liar’s Crown
- Meren is a hidden princess, an extra. In the kingdom of Aryd, only one queen is allowed to exist at a time—because a certain immortal nightmare named Eidolon (shudder) has a nasty habit of killing them to extend his own life. So, to keep the line going, every queen has a twin, raised in secret, ready to swap in if the real queen meets an untimely end. And Meren? She’s that twin. Always in the shadows, always a secret, always second.
- Tabra, the “real” princess, is about to be crowned queen, and Meren is supposed to act as her body double in case of trouble. Only, before she can even get to the coronation, BAM!—she’s kidnapped by a suspiciously attractive young man named Reven. And instead of, you know, panicking (which, honestly, she does a little), Meren quickly realizes she has to keep up the ruse that she’s actually Tabra if she wants to stay alive.
- But let’s talk about Reven for a second. He’s all darkness and mystery, with a tragic past and a whole lot of angst. The kind of guy who smirks even when he’s bleeding and probably has ridiculously good hair. He’s giving major Darkling vibes.
Meren, on the other hand, is equal parts sass and self-doubt. She’s not resentful about being the “extra” sister—she takes her duty seriously—but now that she’s out in the world, away from her secluded life, she starts questioning everything. Including why she suddenly doesn’t want to escape from her captor.

Romance: Spicy?
And then, the romance. Oh, the slow burn! We get real tension—banter, and those too-long glances that make you want to scream at them to just kiss already. Reven is convinced he’s unworthy of love (tragic men, am I right?), while Meren has never had the chance to give love. When she makes the first move, it’s both satisfying and hilariously unexpected.
But let’s not forget the worldbuilding. The magic system? Awesome. Meren’s sand-wielding powers are unique, and the lore surrounding the Goddesses and Sacred Trees adds a rich depth to the story. And don’t even get me started on the side characters—Vos and Cain?
Then comes the cliffhanger. The kind that leaves you staring at the last page, whispering.

Book Review: The Liar’s Crown | Dominions #1 |
The Liar’s Crown had me hooked with its stunning cover and that chef’s kiss opening line: “To resist is human, to tempt is divine.” And honestly? The book was almost as good as its aesthetics.
Is The Liar’s Crown Worth Reading? - The plot moves at lightning speed—kidnappings, secret identities, a captor (hello, Darkling vibes), and an immortal villain who just won’t die. Meren is a strong heroine, and her slow-burn romance with Reven had some great moments (when she made the first move? Iconic). But… something was missing. Maybe it was the world-building that almost clicked but needed more depth. Or the writing that sometimes felt a bit off.
Still, I was entertained. And that ending? RUDE. Will I read book two? Probably. Am I obsessed? Not quite. But if you love kidnapper-to-lover tension, snarky banter, and high-stakes magic, it’s worth a read.
