Wrath of the Dragons by Olivia Rose Darling Review

Wrath of the Dragons by Olivia Rose Darling is a romantasy novel feat. Elowyn and Cayden and a story full of drama. Dragons? Present. Romance? Marked-by-the-gods level intense.

Political drama? Hmm.. Let’s see..

Wrath of the Dragons by Olivia Rose Darling

Olivia Rose Darling delivers a sequel that’s bigger, bolder, and more dragon-filled (finally!). We get Cayden’s POV, which adds depth and a break from Elowen’s exhausting one.

Plus, Ryder and Cayden’s bromance? Top-tier. Finnian? Deserves a novella. The pacing picks up like a warhorse in the final act, galloping straight to an ending that left me crying into my metaphorical crown.

“I’ve seen your soul, and the darkness within it just makes the light that much more beautiful.”

BUT—and here’s why it’s 3.75 stars, not 5—I needed a flowchart to keep track of new characters and locations. Zale? Zarius? Someone give them different names or a helpful tattoo. Also, the climax kinda felt… flat until a point. Like ordering a spicy meal and getting mild sauce.

The sudden villain switcheroo with a random mage? Plot twist or plot oops? And Cayden’s “shadow powers” reveal is also not that exciting. Another shadow daddy? Is there a fantasy book law mandating this?

Still, I liked this book.

Wrath of the Dragons isn’t perfect, but it’s entertaining as hell and ends on a killer cliffhanger that guarantees book three will either break me or earn a place on my favorites shelf. Either way—I’m here for the carnage.

Spoilers:

So, Wrath of the Dragons kicks off right where Fear the Flames left us emotionally shredded. And this time? We get both POVs — finally, some insight into our favorite growly war machine.

Characters:

  • Elowen Atarah – A battle-hardened healer torn between softness and survival.
  • Cayden Veles – A deadly warrior.
  • Ryder – Loyal protector and anchor of the group.
  • Finnian – The flirty rogue.
  • Saskia – A calm, cryptic Seer.

The first half? Emotional therapy hour. Elowyn is working through trauma, learning to trust again (harder than sword-fighting, honestly), and trying to not fall apart every five minutes.

Cayden is his usual killing-machine-with-a-heart self, but now he’s also soft with her — and sarcastic. We eat that up. Then BAM. The second half throws you off a dragon mid-flight. War? Check. Betrayal? Double check. Dragons? Oh yes, lots of dragons.

A power-hungry villain is back (seriously, why Zale?), and there’s prophecies all over. Political coups, magical creatures, and heart-pounding action? All here.

As for the ending? Let’s just say Olivia Rose Darling didn’t come to play. There’s a huge twist that made readers scream into the void. No, I won’t spoil the exact scene — but emotionally you will be unstable after that? Think again.
