Book Review: The Staircase in the Woods
The Staircase in the Woods is when you go camping with friends & one of them vanishes, the group falls apart, and then— after twenty years —the staircase is seen again. So, obv., they must face their pasts, fears, and (if any) monstrous thing lurks up on stairs.
I’ll give this book a solid 4 stars. The premise? Genius. The writing? Engaging. The characters? Deep, complex, and totally relatable in their messed-up ways —wrapped in the perfect horror package.
But… (there’s always a “but”) the pacing. Ugh. It starts strong, grabs you by the throat, then kinda slows down halfway through with some repetitive bits that left me wondering if Wendig was just trying to drag out the tension a bit too long.
That said, once the tension goes up again, it’s a wild and thrilling ride that couldn’t be put down. The emotional depth of the characters was real and made the horror hit deeper.

The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig Summary (Spoilers)
So,The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig. Sounds direct enough, right?
Just a few friends in the woods, came across a staircase. But oh, no… no ordinary staircase. It’s the kind that doesn’t just lead to the next level of your home, but straight into the heart of nightmare fuel. Seriously, who thought climbing stairs was a good idea?
“Friendship is like a house. It’s built on trust, but sometimes the foundation cracks, and you realize you’ve been living in the ruins.”
Five teenagers, promised to always protect each other, find themselves at the foot of this staircase (ou tof nowhere) one night. Then, one of them—the brave (or foolish?) one—decides, “ I’ll go up alone. What could happen?”
And he vanishes. Hmm.., expected? Now, 20 years later, the staircase shows up again, and the remaining four friends are dragged back into the woods to face what happened that night, and maybe, save their missing friend. Because, obviously, what else do you do when a creepy staircase reappears after two decades?
Thriller Read: The Perfect Divorce by Jeneva Ros
Ending Spoilers:
As adults, they’re broken. Haunted by trauma, regrets, and the unspoken who was at fault that night? You know, the usual adult problems. But the real thing is, the staircase isn’t the only thing.
Oh, no. There’s also a house too..(becoz every haunted staircase needs a haunted house, right?). And just say, it’s a house that feeds on your fears. Cool?
The group not just fights the staircase but faces their worst nightmares. Hello, body horror and psychological terror. In the end, they realize that facing the house and their fears together is their only chance to save their friend—and maybe fix some of the wreckage they’ve made of their lives. Also, the staircase? It’s still there. Happy climbing. 🪜
Quotes:
“You can run from your memories, but you can’t outrun the things they turn into when you leave them in the dark too long.”
