Alright, so Oathbound? Absolutely wrecked me in ways I was not emotionally prepared for. Tracy Deonn truly said, let’s break Bree into a thousand tiny pieces and see if she can put herself back together again. And honestly? I have never rooted for a fictional character harder in my life.
But because this is Tracy Deonn we’re talking about, Bree doesn’t just get to take a sad girl walk and heal in peace. Oh no. Instead, she makes a deal with the Shadow King—yes, you read that right—a literal shapeshifting ruler of the demon underworld (Bree, what part of self-care is this??). She trades her future for training, hoping to finally get control of her abilities, but—plot twist!—she accidentally locks herself into being his protégé. Because, of course.
And listen, I thought I knew where this love triangle was going. I thought. But then I read “So drown.” and my entire soul left my body. (No, seriously. I had to put the book down and stare at the ceiling for a full five minutes. What does it MEAN? Who said it? WHY?!)
Multiple POVs in Oathbound
Oh, and can we talk about the multiple POVs? Tracy said, You want more perspectives? You want the world to EXPAND? Boom—every single character you love is now even more amazing. And I ate it up. Every single chapter was giving me life (and simultaneously taking it away).
And then there’s Part 3. Listen. I was pacing. I was gripping my book like it owed me money. The stakes? Through the roof. The tension? Suffocating. The plot twists? RUTHLESS. And don’t even get me started on that ending. My hands were literally shaking as I turned the last page. high stake ending for sure. Tracy Deonn just does not care about my well-being, and honestly? Respect. She earned that.
So now, here I am, emotionally shaken, somehow willing to wait for The Legendborn Cycle Book 4 (because I need to recover first), but also desperate for answers. How is Bree going to survive this? Who can she even trust? And most importantly—am I ever going to emotionally recover from this book? (Spoiler: probably not.)
