Book Review: The Bright Years
Okay, The Bright Years absolutely wrecked me—in the best, most sob-through-your-shirt kind of way. This generational Texas saga had love, emotions, heartbreak, lost siblings, a dog almost everything, and more emotional ketchup than a soap opera on fast-forward.
Lillian, our strong matriarch, stole my heart. Ryan? A messy masterpiece of a man. Did I want to slap him with a therapy brochure in the ’90s? Yes. Did I cry when he finally got sober ? Also yes. And Jet—sweet, determined, endlessly curious Jet—is the kind of character you want to protect and high-five. Pure gold.
That first lil part of the book felt a bit… floaty. The storytelling format (broad time skips) left me emotionally dangling for a while. I wanted more grounding early on to connect with the characters before the tears started pouring.
But halfway through? I was in deep. speed-reading, emotionally-invested-in-everyone deep.

The Bright Years by Sarah Damoff Summary (Spoilers)
Alright, The Bright Years, is a generational gut punch wrapped in Texas charm, sprinkled with secrets, and served with a side of tears (yours, not the characters—they’re too emotionally worn out by year 35).
We begin with Lillian, a bank teller who loses her parents young ( due to cancer & drunk driver… life’s cruel combo). In the early ’70s, she has a fling with country singer Zack Melendez—cue unexpected pregnancy and a heartbreaking adoption. Zack, of course, is oblivious to the whole thing.
“We weren’t perfect. We weren’t even close. But somewhere between the silence and the shouting, we still managed to be a family.”
Enter Ryan Bright: a dreamer with love for art and Lillian’s beauty. They marry in 1982. Things look hopeful—until they don’t. Miscarriage. Alcoholism. Emotional distance.
Ryan slowly move on his father’s toxic footsteps, tossing beer here and there. They never divorce, but he lives a double life, pops into Jet’s life like an unreliable sitcom dad, and ghosts out again. Oof.
Georgette (aka Jet), their daughter, is the real hero. Born in 1986, she has childhood with a borderline-absent dad, a strong loving mom, and a border collie named Stethoscope (because future-doctor goals, obviously). Jet’s nickname? “Curious Georgette,” naturally.
Ending:
Plot twist? In 2009, Jet gets an email from Davis Condie—her long-lost half-brother. Yep, Zack’s son. The baby Lillian gave up has grown up and found his way back into the narrative. Family secrets: exposed.
Jet becomes a nurse, Ryan sobers up (for real this time), and redemption blooms like bluebonnets after a Texas rainstorm. It hurts, it heals, and somehow, it shines.
Messy, moving, unforgettable. The Brights? Forever in our hearts.
Quotes:
“I kept drinking to forget the worst of me. But the worst of me always remembered.”
